We all tend to solve our fly fishing problems in our own unique ways. Solutions very often come from logical sources. Some seem like simple common sense, while others might need a more complex evaluations. What ever the solutions, necessity is the mother of inventions.

What would you do in this situation?

I just lost my cutting nippers somewhere in the sand, possible the water. I'm miles away from my car and there is no one is site. I know that sometime during the day I'm going to need them to trim flies and change tippets.

What would you do to solve this problematic crisis?

Use my teeth. I almost never carry snippers. It's a little fuzzy when trimming flies but it gets the job done.

My Abel pliers???no, not that. I would start to cry assuming no one was watching or if someone was watching I would say about losing them,(as you would say after all the kids see you fall from your bike as a kid),"I meant to do that". Anyway, drop to the ground and search for a sharp shell, use it to cut my jugular vein.

Take out the small magnet I carry just in case this type of thing happens and start sweeping the sand with it attached to a 3 ft. length of mono.

Main clipper is always on a zinger, always have a spare cutting tool, and I can bite thru anything up to 25# maxima so I'm good for tippets and tapers but not butt's - but since the only clipping I do regularly is tippet and taper. I'd be set to fish until I make a move, which would bring me back to the truck. Any butt blood knots would be left tag ends hanging. No crisis here.

BTW - I never use anything but $.99 common nail clippers and keep a few around - in the truck, in my chest pack, on my zinger, etc.

Good thread though!

I'd use my hook file to hone a killer edge on my left index fingernail...

Just have to be cautious of other left-handed body functions!

Nice thread Ray:

1. I always use a lanyard.
2. I would have to strike John over the head with a blunt object
& start searching for his Abel pliers.

Alone? Ahhh.. Umm....

Pull out the cell phone and get directions to the nearest Wall Mart? No ahh.. call Juro and then go mooch (but then you'd have to be near Chatham Light or Monomoy for that to work since he fishes only those 2 spots
)
Ya that's the ticket.
The real answer is the teeth of course. Some people use them regularly.

What about the most obvious solution? Catch a bluefish and tether it all day. Grab it by the tail and let him do the trimming.

There's nothing a bluefish can't eat through. Including beer cans, Bob.

Heres two that haven't been mentioned and a caution.

Use the sharp edge of the beer can that Rays blue fish chewed up (or a piece of broken glass) to cut the line.
or:
Use the water proof matches in the emergency kit to melt the line/modify the fly .

To those of using your teeth be carefull. Several years ago I spit out 1/2 of a wisdom tooth after the line slipped while tightening a nail knot whose tag end was held in my teeth. It was the first day of a four day fishing trip and boy did it hurt by the end of the trip.

Hummmm... I wonder what Terry's dentist would say about his "tooth" nipper tool? I have used them on 4 - 8 lb test but 15 - 20 lb tippets????
Ouch!

Myself, I would drop my waders and reach into my pocket for my trusty schrade pocketknife! It has more than paid for itself in usefulness when @ work, camping, gardening, canoeing, hunting and fishing! I ALWAYS carry it - except to the airport - the bastards confiscated my old one two years ago when I went in to pick up a friend.

Fish on!
