Signs of spring...

Great Blue herons are back on their rookery nests on route 2 near Littleton again! Every nest had a long-leg staking it's claim. The wetland is still under slush but I guess their squatting is a sign of competition for the primo nesting grounds there. Both good signs - a wetland with high production and enough herons to compete for existing nests... dozens of them.

Another, if somewhat less esthetically pleasing sign of spring: my first boat-on-128 sighting of the season, southbound, at around 6:30 yesterday morning ;)

Can you say springus interruptus?

I remember one year a flash storm came thru in late spring. I went to Thoreau's Walden Pond and walked to the back cove to try my hand at trout. There were several of those really beautiful swallows with the briliant blue backs and orange chest highlights dead and floating in the water. I assumed it was due to weather and lack of insects.
A fellow angler at work said that micro stripers are in one of the rivers in the Fall River area. Don't know if this is true but it could be the first scouts . The Lee's and Coles in that area have been known to get early arrivals. This rain will not help matters.

Don't tell me about spring, up all night keeping water out of the basement. Yesterday a peregrine falcon came down and snatched my tame chipmunck from my back door stoop even though there is a clothesline there, and within two feet of shrubs. I had been feeding this chipmunck since last April. He has been around since the first week in Febuary this year. This falcon comes about every other day, the yard is full of bird feathers. Oh! for the good old summertime.

Count me in on the water-in-the-basement crowd... I'll bet there isn't a sump pump to be found in every hardware store from Jersey to Maine.

Sorry to hear about the chipmunk! Maybe you could tame the falcon now

It will take a while for the rivers to calm down from this one. Has anyone else taken a look the the hydrograph for the Squanacock river.

It sounds like a lot of us, myself included, have our own indoor casting pools today. The ceiling is a little low though.

Sorry to hear about the chipmunk Art.
THE SHAWSHEEN RIVER LOOKS MORE LIKE THE AMAZON RIGHT NOW !!!
Good to see you posting on this board, you will be a good addition, a buch of great guys.
Signs of spring?

Just got hammered by 50 cm of snow. That's over a foot and a half 8-(
Hey Juro,
If you need a sump pump....I have a brand new submersible one that you can borrow.

That's very generous of you, thanks! I think I've got it under control at this point, I put some mileage on the craftsman 16 gallon wet vac and the water down there has receded to one side of the basement which lets the 'stuff' have dry berth for a while. Finally have an excuse to throw a lot of junk away! Mattresses that the kids outgrew, old veneer doors, national geographic magazines that the kids have been clipping pictures from for homework, etc.

With this saturation in the ground I hope we don't get any more rain for a while... boy we've really earned a good fishing season this year!
