Hi - headed to Puerto Rico at the end of February and have a guided trip booked for my 11 year old son and myself - we will be hitting the lagoons. I am wondering if it is worth bringing my gear down, but am not familiar with any of the surrounding area. Is there any place to do any flats fishing near San Jaun or any area to the East. I will be staying close to the Luquillo Beach area.
Also, what types of flies should I be tying up? For my son, probably he will be throwing a spin rod - so any good lure tips would be appreciated.
Tight lines,
Dave and Brett

Not a lot of information unless you're talking big game (billfish, etc)...

RE:puerto Rico - Looking for any info on hitting the shore for Tarpon

Juro - yes I did get an e-mail from Rafa. He indicated he has an opening, but didn't get any info on spots to fish from shore.
Thanks,

Dave

Dave and Brett,

I can't provide any specific info on fly fishing Puerto Rico's shorelines, but do have some other ideas.

First, check out http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/mgtbltp/page1.html

This web site has information on fly fishing Vieques, which is an island just east of mainland PR.

Second, check out the Caribbean section of my web site (http://home.earthlink.net/~fishvet) - specifically, the Fly Fishing Caribbean Islands page. I wrote this article to give people enough background knowledge about CAribbean island coastal habitats so they could find some good fishing on their own. You should be able to find some decent shoreline spots in PR basaed on the information in the article.

Third, for general shoreline fishing, clouser minnows - chartreuse and white, size 1.

check out Captain Omar Orracca at Caribbean OutfittersOmar has been guiding the backcountry for tarpon for a long time and he knows the channels and lagoons like the back of his hand. I wrote an article several years ago for Salt Water Sportsman magazine about the tarpon in the lagoons posted here that you may find useful.

I have fished for bones and permit on the island of Culebra which is off the east end of puerto rico near St. Thomas, USVI. From what I have heard the locals pretty much wiped out the bonefish around Puerto Rico proper by netting them for food, especially on the north side of the island. I think your shore opportunities are pretty limited and I would worry about going to some of the places by myself, or unchaparoned.

Good luck and let me know if you have specific questions I may be able to offer.
