Optimistically checked out a few spots in Orleans area Sunday morning. Started deep in sheltered part of Little Pleasant Bay. Sunrise, at the top of the flood, water was like glass. Zero wind. Picture postcard morning, but no bait or fish.
Moved to coves inside Nauset Harbor. Tide was starting to move out to Nauset Inlet. Saw a couple of groups of 5 or 6 birds diving. Couldn't get close enough to see what they were eating, but the bait looked to be a bout 1 - 2 inches long.
Checked out Nauset Beach up to the Inlet. John, the birds were there again. Hundreds of birds sitting in what used to be the deep channel off the point (now very shallow). Occasionally groups of 6 - 8 would start diving at the same small bait I saw inside. Still could not get close enough to see the bait up close. Anyone have any ideas?
As others have said, Nauset Beach has transformed from last year. Parts of the channel filled in, parts of the beach drop steeply from the high water mark, and then extend out flat for some distance. Should be fun exploring the "new" outer beaches this year.
