Dear Angler,
I thought it was a good time to send one last note from Iceland before our hectic summer season begins. After a long, tedious winter we are counting down the days for the salmon season to begin. Most of the snow has left the low ground and the summer birds are beginning to arrive.
Sales of fishing have been very good this winter. We think this may have something to do with the reliability of Iceland's salmon runs and the recent collapse of grilse stocks around the rest of the North East Atlantic countries. We wish them better fortunes this summer.
Enclosed is a list of our remaining fishing dates. There are still some very good weeks left, so it is not too late to book. At the end of the list are some very interesting odd days on some of our most famous rivers. The Vididalsa, for instance, is renowned for its numbers of two sea-winter fish throughout the summer. A late cancellation at the East Ranga has opened up some prime dates at the height of the run. The corresponding weeks last year produced between 250 and 350 salmon per week.
Trout fishing and a mixture of trout and salmon is found at Arbot Lodge, situated on the banks of the Laxa i Adaldal. This is an ideal centre for a family/ with a mixture of anglers and those who don't! The surrounding area has many tourist attractions while the fishers get down to what Iceland is all about.
The Arctic char is a vastly underrated game fish but we are sure that over the next few years more and more people will consider coming to fish specifically for them. The Bjarnafjardara in the north west corner of Iceland comes into its own by early August. Up to four anglers will have
this river all to themselves. The stretch of Midfjardara from the bridge, carrying Route 1 over the river, down to the sea is an excellent char beat.
The river is wide and split into many channels here. Once the shoals of char, fresh in from the ocean, are found sport can be rousing.
For the last couple of seasons our reindeer hunting trips to Greenland have proved a great success. There have also been some scouting parties there to assess the char fishing prospects and they look to be good. Our hunting concession covers a great swathe of South Greenland and contains hundreds of fjords, rivers and lakes where char are found. The fish gather in the fjords around mid-July then make their way up the rivers and into the lakes. We've found August to be the best fishing month so far. There are also fewer mosquitoes at that time!
The trips are based around our hunting lodge in the village of Narsaq, from where we leave each day for the chosen fishing area. There are also opportunities to camp at the more distant waters. This will appeal to any fisher with a pioneering spirit.
