Cape Lookout for albies

Hi all, I'm heading down with a friend from Oct 26-Nov 1 and we're fishing from shore out there all but one guided day. Has anyone else done a trip like this? We've heard that some folks camp out by the hook on the beach, and we're considering this as it would allow us the most time on the water.

It's proven pretty tough to find good info on fishing from shore down there, it seems to be pretty much a boat fishermen's game, but i figure maybe someone out there has done it and could pass on some pointers.

Matt

ps I figured this forum would be the best place for this question, as albies definitely qualify as an obsession.

I am fishing with Mark Frondorf this weekend who I am sure would be willing to provide some direct insight into this once he gets back to the keyboard.

He's a freshwater flyfishing guide from Maryland and has been doing this trip regularly. He talks of albies up to 20 pounds! I can't imagine that.

Stay tuned, hope we can get his feedback before your departure dates.

Nate - anything to offer here? I know your relatives would say "trash fish" but hey, anything that can scream drag like that gets my vote.
Its all true about the fatties down here. It's tuff fishing from shore, the recent push of anglers w/ boats coming down to fish/guide makes it very difficult when the fish are on the beach/inlet. But this can happen anywhere. Your best shots are Bardens Inlet fishing from the spit, off of buoy R4. Rough Point on the western end of Shackleford Bank is the second spot(Beafort Inlet), alittle less crowded here.

Camping, fires, beer, surfing, fishing yea you can do what you wish within reason.

Few other fish to catch from shore puppy drum(redfish) flounder, speckled trout, King Mackeral.

Ferries to the Islands, HArkers Island fishing center, Rob 252-728-3907 to the spit. Outer Banks Ferry, Perry 252-728-4129 will take you from the Beaufort waterfront to shackleford. If you run out supplies(beer)/ice both services can bring it to you for a price$.

Good luck,
Dave Dietzler

The Park service was talking about a free camping permit? Don't know a thing about it. But the numbers above will.

Somehow I missed this post until now, thanks for the wealth of info. I will be making a few calls to research for the fall trip. I hope we can hook up with you!
