Hans Van Klinken ties these with a Poly yarn body instead of Deer Hair, with fluorescent wool spiral wrap, the yarn giving the wool something to sit on rather than sinking into a Deer Hair body.

So, they're a surface fly, and not used like a Woolly Bugger?
I've never fished for Salmon or even Steelhead, but have tied & used Bombers and some of the other dry flies. I found that our stream Smallmouth bass liked them, and they're fun to tie.
Yes a surface fly and usually hitched as well to make lots of wake.
