Cool water (mid-50's), snotty weather, and plenty of bait in the water meant lots of healthy bright stripers on the bayside this past weekend. Enjoyed a multi-legal morning with Hawkeye and Roop, all of us had lots of fish to wrestle with.
With July coming in a few days who knows how long it will hold up. Now that I mentioned it I'll bet it's all over ;-)
Anyway, the point is that I noticed the water was much cooler than typical on a late June day - especially on the flats. I assume this is because the flats are strongly affected by the sun, and there was a lack of that.
I wonder also if the wind pulls cold water to the shore - it was a very hard south wind on Sat am... I wonder if that turns the water over to pull the cold water like a pulley toward the shore?
I noticed that the surface temps around Duxbury / Plymouth stay colder than surrounding areas thru first half of summer, and the winds are prevailing SW. It kind of implies that the lee of the wind can get cooler water temps somehow.
I could be all wrong but something to think about.
