To all new fly fishers, the thing that tripped me up when I was first starting out was reading water, especially pocket water. Finding trout in pocket water was confusing but I enjoyed the challenge of hopping from boulder to boulder and sneaking around the whitewater casting dry flies into the churning water.
To help "mentor" any new anglers out there, I typed up some articles on reading pocket water (with illustrations). I hope that it encourages you to get out and explore those rough waters like I do.
Part 1 - Targeting Trout Around a Single Boulder
Part 2 - Rock Gardens
Part 3 - Casting, Mending, and Line Management
