Fly Line Care

How many of you take your lines of your spools and store them on a larger spool durning the off season? I have never done this with my fresh water lines but maybe I will for the saltwater lines. With the cost of a top line approaching $100 maybe its time to think about this.

RE:Fly Line Care

Thanks for reminding me!

I used to work with some guys who would build special racks for their lines to allow maximum straight lengths during storage in the basement. The most radical I've heard of is the FF firemen who hang lines in the hose tower!

Bill, who now lives in Seattle, uses those contractor size spools to wind lines onto during storage. This seems to be a good compromise to me.

RE: cleaning - I thoroughly rinse my lines before any period of storage. I typically dump the line into a tub and strip it thru a piece of cloth or paper towel, for dry lines I will then apply "Glide" once in a while.

I usually don't do anything particular for intermediate lines or the fast sink stuff for SWFF, except cleaning thoroughly. My personal pref - I don't like a slicked up line for striper fishing.

RE:Fly Line Care

I always do, I think it helps the life of the line. I use the plastic hangars that have the indent on top. It allows me to hang the line on a loop as big as I want.

It's a sad day in the Roop household, I started to break down all my fly rods today... couldn't bring myself to strip the reels.

Maybe we'll have a little global warming?

RE:Fly Line Care

I clean all the salt and other junk off of my lines (warm soapy water, thorough rinse), and then make loops that around 18" or so long. These get hung on plastic hooks on the side of a bookcase in my office, so I can look at them and count how many more days it is until they go back on the reels . With shooting heads, I do the same with the heads, but just detwist the running line (braided mono) in the back yard and leave it on the reel.

RE:Fly Line Care

I do clean all my lines, but leave them on the spool for the winter. I usually strip all the line off and scrub out the inside of the spool (where salt has inevitably built up despite ritualistic cleaning all season)with a toothbrush and some wd-40. I clean the lines with some flyline cleaner that comes with a little scouring pad. By running the line through twice you usually pull off all the salt, dirt, etc. Then I do apply a coat of greased lightning--I usually don't dress lines too much during the season, but it makes me believe the lines won't get dry, brittle or crack during their extended period of rest. Incidentally, that greased lightning on a monocore line is like cheating...
