Thoughts on Marlboro

Well, I'm fresh off my short stay at this years Marlboro show.

As always it was great to run into Juro, DFix, Striblue and Pete the Flightless Bird(too quick a visit Penguin).

I got to say hi to Eddie, Dble Haul, Salty Dog, Slinger and Quentin too + meet Pete's buddy Bob and introduce my friend Mike Braccia to the FFF in the process. You'll probably be hearing more from Mike in the future(he sells beer with me as well, not a bad guy to know).

As for the show itself, still very entertaining in my third year of attendance. Mike and I took in the George Roberts casting clinic which was fairly good. Other than that we milled about, checking out all manner of gear. We watched Gartsides at work. Striblue, none of his flies had working gills.......he's a mere mortal.

I really liked the look of the new Van Staal 9/10 reel. My only concern was the trouble the salesman had loading the drag cartridge back into the reel, and, he had trouble re-attaching the spool correctly after taking it off. It seemed rather finicky.

The Temple Forks rods seemed really nice. So did the Redington Wayfarer 5-pc outfits with the GDS reels. For $350 that seems to be a great introductory package to the salt.

Mike bought a nice William&Joseph flats fanny pack while at the show too. He likes gear so I'm sure he'll get hooked on the sport.

The FFF tying set-up is still the most user friendly feature at the show. Kudo's to all that man the booth and draw the weekend crowds into the tying fray. I entered tickets in raffles for each day but forgot to put my name on any of them. I'm sure that hurts my chances of winning. OOPS!!

If I can get back this weekend I will, but it doesn't look feasible. Only time will tell.

Mark, You're still good to go for the raffle. With our system it wasn't necessary for you to put your name on the tickets. We have a list of the names, contact information and ticket numbers for those who bought tickets. If your ticket is drawn we will know that it was yours. (Juro's idea -- and a good one too!)

I will leave it up to Juro to post the winners for today's drawings, but I can say this much: I hope you have better luck in the Saturday and Sunday drawings!

Fingers still crossed for the Sunday raffle results.

On to the next order of business, the Casting Clave, when?

Oh, and Wilmington, what are the dates?

Same as last year, Saturday of the show 3-7pm. We will close down early that day. Spoke with Dave Williams about it on the way home this evening.

Seattle show is the next event on my mind... feb 21-23. We should be all set by March (Wilmington).

Also, we need to have a solid plan for the spring cape clave 2003... Anchorage on the Cove again perhaps? Nickerson Park camporee? We should have some wider range with the boats that have been recently included and Capt.Art Sawayer has already put his hat into the ring to show us some of the springtime honeyholes aboard the FinFun.

Thumbs up

Mark- The banner that you brought in on Friday was great. It really rounded out the booth nicely.

Sorry we missed you mark. Maybe catch you at Wilmington. Spring can't come too soon.

Sorry I missed it, 10 days away from the family requires a lot of make up time with the little ones when you get home.

Congratulations to all, nice to see a second generation of forum members stepping up to keep things rolling. Remember to keep the good karma going and foster the relationships that will ensure there will be new members to help out next year.

My best to all.

Roop

Hey Roop....

...where ya' been?

Actually, that is an unfair question since I'm twice the Phantom Forum member that you are(and that's sure nothing to be proud of.)
