Zonker Candy

Materials
Hook of your choice.
Zonker strips
Gold braid
Thirty pound mono for the tail loop
5 minute epoxy
Stick on eyes

Tie in your thread at the front of the hook and wrap to the bend.
Tie in a loop of mono to support the tail of the fly. The mono tag ends should be almost the length of the hook to provide a consistent base for the braid.
Advance the tread to the eye leaving enough room for the head and tie in the braid. Wrap to the bend of the hook and back. Tie off. If your tail loop is drooping you can use the braid to give it more support by making one pass under it.
Remove the fly from your vise and apply a thin coat of epoxy the braid turning the fly to make sure that it's symmetrical.
When the epoxy is dry take a zonker strip that about 2.5 times the length of the hook (it can be much longer but should not be shorter) remove about 1/16 inch of hair from the front of the strip for your tie in point. For a smaller head trim this area into a point.
Line the strip up to the hook to find the rear tie in point. Separate the hairs to get to the hide and tie it down on top of the shank. The tie in point should be where the hook begins its bend downward.
Reattach your thread at the head of the fly. Apply some kind of adhesive along the top of the braid taking care not to get any on the rabbit hair. (I used Hanson's hard as nails) Pull the Zonker strip over the adhesive, tie down, and finish the head.
Apply stick on eyes and a final very thin coat of Hanson's hard as nails. You might be able to use epoxy here but I'm not that talented with it.

Just a couple of thoughts about this fly. It fishes best in moving water and needs very little manipulation to look alive. Be sure to rinse and air dry these or the rabbit will rot and the fly will fall apart.
Good luck
Larry
