flatwing, albies and EC254

Nice fly! I like those EC 254 hooks too--nice wide gap and short shank, although wondering if you've had the same experience I have using them on albies--they open. I think it's a soft wire or something as I have had several open up or break on albies. Page Rogers' Rhody Chovy is tied on that hook, and I started tying it on a different hook because I was losing fish.

Also, what kind of saddle hackle are you using on your flatwings of this size? I want to tie a bunch of 3-4" flatwing juvy sand eel imitations for the flats and need some guidance on good hackles to buy for thin straight feathers for that length fly.

Are you using the 254ss ? I have heard of problems w/ the stainless steel version. However the 254f is carbon steel w/ a seagaurd finish. I never had a problem w/ them.
As far as saddles, I have tried them all. For skinny, short saddles , Ken Abrames can't be beat. Cabelas sells some saddles under their name from whiting that aren't bad for the price(17.99). Metz micrbarb saddles come in third.

Single feather flatwing

Mike,

This one is a beaut!

Any chance you could share the recipe? I particularly like the restrained use of flashy material.

Best regards,

-Doc

2 thumbs up! I am definitely into sparse, and it's one of my favorite color schemes as well.

Mike -

We have been trying to keep entries here somewhat consistent lately because we have been working on a fly pattern database and are planning to use the pattern information out of this section to "seed" it.

Without clicking on the link you provided, I assumed your post w/ link to the homepage of reeltime.com was a 'shortcut'...

But boy was I wrong!

Let me just say that I went to look at the sequence you posted on reeltime.com and I was very impressed. I didn't realize there was a direct click to your pattern sequence on the homepage.

Your article is excellent and I recommend it to anyone who is tying this style of fly.

http://www.reel-time.com/pattern/bri...wingprimer.htm

I hope when we create this database you will let us use your pattern info to go with your pics, even though the text might not be available here in this thread.

Your skills and enthusiasm are welcome here, and I hope to get out on the water with you during the upcoming season!

Jared -

If I understand your point correctly, there is merit to both points of view here:

Although we have very few, forums do come with rules - and it's old news that we're using this board and all pattern archives as place holders while people are working (on their own dime) to build a database-driven fly pattern archive. Our standing request to post recipes with fly pics has come up several times in posts and PM's over several weeks. In fact if there is no pic / recipe pair it creates more work for us later, or future pic entries with no recipe, etc.

On the other hand, we can't expect that everyone knows this since it is afterall a BB category and we have no way to enforce it. I'll bet you didn't know this either, and I sure didn't do a good job of explaining on my first reply.

I tried to explain it as best I could in my second post this morning, hopefully we'll get things up and running soon! Meanwhile I hope no one misinterprets what's going on here. I will see if we can figure out how to post rules on the archive boards. Here's a start:

please post recipes in the same post as the pics
