Sucker spawn

Here is a batch of sucker spawns I just tied up. This is one of the patterns that I have had the most success with fishing the Lake Ontario tribs. Last time out when the fishing was slow I hooked three fish in a row out of the same hole on a pink one.

Yep those will work, have a similar egg ties. There was one called Mikes Egg Sack that I use occasionally in the water it looked just like a spawn bag. Got guilty using it though so I stopped.

Are you using Glo Bug yarn or some other type of yarn ?

Plus some brief tying instructions would be appreciated.

Been tying a bunch of egg flies myself lately. Had to restock the boxes

They are tied with plastic yarn although I tie them with sparkle yarn, angora yarn or glo bug yarn also. It's an easy tie but effective pattern....good one to fill the box up with. I can lose them as fast as I tie them.

Lay a heavy thread base down of a color usually brighter than the yarn. Split the yarn into its individual plies. I like to combine different colors. Tie them in at the back of the hook shank. Form loops with the yarn and keep tieing them down working to the eye of the hook. Tie off and trim the tags from the front and back.

Trout love'em too.

Incidentally, anyone know the difference between the Sucker Spawn and the Carpet Fly? Is it just the type of yarn used?

I believe the carpet fly is made of a similar type of yarn but tied like a glo bug not sucker spawn. Usually a lot of different colors are used together including even darker natural colors.

Flyfishjeff

Thanks that is a very similar tie to the old Mikes Better Egg Sack that has been around for at least 20 years. Will add some of that to the boxes. Thanks
