Wink Drying fish tails (not tales)

My tuna buddy dropped off the tail of a recent victim long with some steaks the other day for my 6 year old daughter - our budding naturalist (a la Teddy Roosevelt).

Anyway, it's in the freezer for now but how would you preserve it?

Stake it out on plywood & dust with Boraxo?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Roop

Probably wouldn't fit but perhaps a food dehydrator. I once dried a snakeskin by pegging it to a board and using salt with adequate results.

Roop,

I have played around with preserving pheasant skins and fox tails and the like and the Boraxo is a pretty effective way to start.
Don't just dust it on though, really load it up with the powder and change it frequently at the outset. The Borax pulls the moisture from the skin and draws out the acids. I've found it best to preserve the piece in a closed environment to flies and insects but open to the air as much as possible. Fine nylon mesh over a plastic box for instance works pretty well. Let us know how you make out...
