Bonito Set Ups?

What set ups do people use for hardtails. What I mean is what kind of lines, leaders, tipits, etc.

I like clear WF intermediates, flouro 15# or better and primarily realistic silverside patterns as well as the proven bunnies, etc. They eat a lot of sand eels and I've caught them on sliders as well as deep eels as well as epoxy bodied silverside patterns. They are toughest when feeding on clouds of tiny bait. Even when they are not visible they will take deep in currents if they are patrolling the area. The Estey's are very good at finding them along shallow shoal rips as they demonstrated at the last boneclave. 8 or 9 wt's are fine up this far north.

it really depends one where you are fishing. Either intermeds or super-sinkers. Normally I fish 12lb fluoro from shore & 20lb from a boat....(except off the walls where I go with the 20).

I always use a sinking line when fishing for anything. The only time I go to a clear intermediate is when the fish are actively feeding on the surface then I will use a floater or intermediate to keep the surface fly on top. I caught 3 Bonito on Sat. off of Weekapaug BW using my 300 gr. Teeny and throwing a small olive and white deceiver with large eyes and the head epoxied. I tie this fly sparse and with extra flash, I have been messing around with overtying the bucktail with pearl angel hair to give the fly a shiney profile and seems to be very effective as evidenced by my success this weekend. I got an email today with some very interesting tuna news coming from the Newport area, may have to take tomorrow off to recon that area.

Tightlines,
Mike M.

Hardtails

For bonito I use an 8 wt and 12 pound flourocarbon tippet on an 8 foot leader with a sinking line of some sort (250 or 300 gr). Down here in NC we fish for them over wrecks and artificial reefs when they are not showing on top or after they go down. For that I like an LC-13 shooting head. We catch a lot of bontio after they stop surface blitzing (Do any of you guys up there in New England do this?). We drift over the reef and if they are there we will get a strike every drift over the highest portion. I prefer to tie flies for bonito on long shank hooks to minimize short strikes.

For albies I prefer a clear int flyline with a 20 lb flouro tippet on an 8 foot leader and a ten wt rod.
