Cool Boston Harbor

Saturday, August 3, 2002: "Here today, gone tomorrow..." That'show it goes when your fishing for blues. Even a weak weather front thatcomes in over night can push the bait and fish out. On Friday, Chris Allenand his son had one of the best light tackle trips ever. We started themorning offshore and hit a nice school of bass. Both Chris and Luke talliedabout 5 keeper bass on popping plugs before the school of bluefish gotgoing. Once they did, it was non-stop action until 8:30 am or so. The bluescame up again an hour later and many more fish were caught and releasedtaking more than a few of my poppers and surface plugs with them! However,Tom Hancock and his friend Spencer were not so fortunate today. The bigschool of bluefish and bass were no where to be found. Didn't notice muchbait, as well. We did manage to find some small bass who would take ourhalf & half's and a few more who were interested but not hungry. Everyday is different on the water and I'm sure tomorrow will be no exception. That's fishin'...

Monday, August 5, 2002: The fishing in the Harbor has slowedover the past few days which is typical for the first week in August. Thesurface water temps. in the bays are averaging 70 - 75 degrees F whichmay explain the slowdown. Yesterday, my charter only managed a few bassup to 27 1/2". Today, Jim Husk from Miami, FL had to work hard around rockystructure to catch a bunch of small schoolies on the fly. I alsofound fish in a deep water channel that were willing to take Jim's clouserminnow.

Wednesday, August 7, 2002: Fished with Wayne LaCroix and andhis 8 year old son, Tyler, who could cast a spinning rod as well as mostadults I've taken fishing. We headed out in a strong NW wind and choppyconditions. A number of small schoolies and blues were taken on fly and light spinning tackle.

Thursday, August 8, 2002: There are few things more fun thanwatching the enthusiasm and excitement of a kid catching his first bluefishor striped bass on
light tackle. I had the pleasure of taking Richard Morris, his 10 year old son Luke, Richard's friend John and his 10 year old sonJohn out for a light tackle trip this morning. At first light until 8:30am or so, the father/son teams were into bluefish mainly in Quincy Bay.Both boys were thrilled to catch their very first blues. Although not everyone was brought to the boat, a few made it to the fish box and the rest were released to fight another day. BTW, some of these bluefish were puking up squid. We found working birds in the anchorage and near the castle but found it difficult to pick up a fish as the schools were spotty and moving very fast. If you have the chance to take a kidfishing, do it! The bass fishing remains slow.

Until next week, we'll seeyou out there...
