Talking Fishing after by-pass surgery

Hi all
I've just gone through some by-pass surgery and came out real well. I lost most of the summer striper season but will live to fish again. My question to this august body is, has anybody out there also been through this. If so could you please answer a few general questions. You know the general questions. How soon did you begin fishing again? Did you have problems? Can you cast and fish as effectivly as before?
Thanks Larry

Have a great rest of the summer and tie one on for me. :hehe:

Larry -

We were just out on the Rip Trip together! Glad to hear you've pulled thru OK. My father in law just went thru it as well, quadruple. He is up and about, athough slowly at first. He didn't give me the best sense of confidence about 12 days after surgery but then about four weeks later he looks charged with new energy and life. I have no idea how long, but based on watching his recovery I would say 2 months and no death marches. Southside Jetties in early October would do it, and there are lots of fish on the early high tides running the shore on their migration.

But don't take my advice - I will let someone who knows better answer besides me...

Glad to hear you are on the mend!

I have a relative in Wales who went through this and she was given a fairly agressive exercise / rehab regime despite being in her seventies. Have you been through that with your surgeon yet? They could probably advise on where fly-fishing would fit in. I would expect it's one of those case-by-case deals since most of us are wired up differently.

I'm with ya buddy. I've basically been shut down since the beggining of July due to my home being a major construction zone. I've been ramping up to this addition project since March and it's peaking now. I'm totally fried:eyecrazy: Every-thing in every room in my house has plaster dust on it!
But I figure, the fall run will be make up time. I was getting them well into Oct. last year.
So, like you, I need to make a come back. At least my vacation will allow me to do some smallie fishing next week. Will report on that in the warmwater later on. Here's to a good recovery for both of us.

Glad to hear you're doing well.

While I wouldn't venture to provide any medical advice, my father is a renowed (insert Jeff's proud son face here ) cardiologist based in CT. While every case undoubtedly has its subtleties (i.e. i'm not sure generalizing with regards to your heart is the best approach), if you're not getting the answers you're looking for from your own doc, I'm sure my father would be more than happy to answer any questions/provide additional clarification. It's amazing to me how many physicians don't spend the time necessary to satisfactorily address all patient laymens terms.

Let me know.

by-pass surgery

Thanks for the offer to talk to your dad. I not to that point yet. The question is more directed at anyone who may have had the proceedure themselves and what they thought about the recovery. My prognosis is excellent and I may be able to fish the fall run and be back playing soccer in November or so.
Thanks Larry
