Thumbs up Pictures from Alaska

Check out my yahoo photo album. I posted a few shots from Alaska. Spent two weeks on the Gulkana River with a couple side trips over to the Parks Hwy to hit Montana and Willow Creeks (If you ever go over there check out http://www.Matsurvpark.com the MatSu Valley RV Park, great people). Great fishing on the Gulkana. Tons of grayling on that river and big ones too. We caught them over 20 inches on everything from EH Caddis to Egg Sucking Leeches, one after the othjer. Rainbow trout fishing is pretty good too. Most folks don;t even know about them. We found lots of rainbows throughout the river and especially in the big rapids in the canyon. That's where the truly big bows are. The ones in the pictures are just a couple. The biggest one that is shown in the net is about 25 inches. The net is a two handed model that we use for salmon. I also hooked one that was a whole lot bigger than that. Jumped 6 or 7 times and tossed my hook back in my face. Tremendous!! The salmon fishing was good. We got lots of sockeyes in the upper river. They are fun to fish for because you can use a 6 wt (saves the arm) and they are active as any fish when hooked. We also got into king salmon in the lower river. Hooked a couple on fly that were too big to handle and one of the guys got on of over 35 pounds on a spoon using a baitcasting outfit. We also fished for kings in Montana Creek. Shallow and clear. Big old blobs holding in the middle of the stream. Pretty cool to just sit there and watch them swim by! Anyway here is the lonk to the photos:

I hope you enjoy them

My brother and I drifted a section of the Gulkana years and years ago. We experienced similar grayling fishing and had a lot of fun with the kings. The highlight of my time on that river is a close encounter I had with a grizzly. Thanks for the report and the awakening of some fond memories!
