Looks like PETA is serious about going after fishing, safer to protest that than hunting, at least we don't have guns in our possession. See link below
Can't make up my mind if I should convert to a Vegetarian Diet or wild life watching as they suggest instead of fly fishing !Got to be the hollywood crowd funding stuff like this.
Can't wait to see them picketing on our rivers ! Hope they start on the west coast first.
Only in America could this happen and they have a chance of being somewhat successful.
Couldn't stand to read much but from my very short glance I was still able to identify one factual error. They claim the fishing ranks are shrinking to wildlife watchers while I'm certain our sport is growing in popularity.
Despite the link that is provided above, I would recommend not checking it out. Sites like that depend upon statistics such as number of hits per day in order to justify advertisement from their sponsors. Without the hits, they simply can't justify their existence to their advertisers.
Suffice it to say that the site is probably the usual rhetoric, leading mindless lemmings to the edge of a cliff where they all take a flying leap.....
If I remember correctly they put up billboards on this topic last year in several coastal towns. Aside from much talking about it, nothing came of it .
The other thing I remember was looking at their site last year and wondering about the qualifications of a Nobel prize winner they quoted on fish suffering. I checked and he was a winner for literature. Nothing like quoting out of context.
Anybody have a way I can redirect all the spam I get to their site?
. . . take a kid fishing. The people who fund these losers are not the same people who as children were given an appreciation of what our "sport/reason for living" is all about. I recommend worms, corn, and PowerBait -- whatever it takes to keep up the action and hold their attention. The ends justify the means. Statistics show that if a person was not exposed to fishing by the age of 16, then the probability that they will take up fishing later in life becomes incredibly small.
So, offer to take your neighbors kid away from that PlayStation 2 for just one Saturday morning and defeat the scourge that is PETA!
Don't be so sure that the ranks of fishermen are increasing. I think that license sales are down in many states including Maine and California.
I like the idea of taking kids fishing.
Befor people start going off on PETA, think about the disrespect and cruelty we see towards animals. It exists.
PETA is a wacky group of extriemists(if you think that "only in the U.S." you are wrong). They will implode as they get further and further out there.
Next time you see someone kicking a fish back into the surf, thank him for PETA.
Fish feel pain, insects feel pain, I feel pain! It pains me to know that good money is going down the drain by putting a dog up on a billboard going north from Galveston to Texas City. There are a whole lot more fishermen/women going to Galveston than from. I don't really know why PETA would put a dog up on the board in the first place, but the news will last about a month and then be taken down. PETA stands against cruelty to animals so I thought. What's next bugs? I'm against using fish as a public display and being wasted just because folks don't want to clean them. But, if you can convince me a fish has feelings; it would have to be because they are conditioned to "eat" anything that gets in their way. That is their mentality. I went fishing up in Lake Fork. I dragged a bait over a bed and the same fish hit it without hooking itself 4 times before it dragged it off its bed. The fish didn't want the bait and literally picked it up and pushed it out of its way. A spawn. I've caught fish while seeing it hit it from the top. Fish were put on this here Earth to feed us and other animals. I would think you would have gotten more of a response if the billboard sign had a dog stuck inside a car. Now that hurts me, as I love dogs. Anyway, PETA has their opinions and us fisherpeople have ours! Good day.
Denise read me an article published in Smithsonian on this subject. It strikes me as common sense that fish rubbing their jaws on rocks after having been caught are repeating a learned behavior in which they were hooked, broken off, and the fly was still embedded in the lip, therefore the jaw-rubbing was used to dislodge the hook. On a semi-unrelated note, if the fish don't have the part of the brain needed to register pain, what difference does it make?
I'd suggest you check out the activities of the animal rights fascists in Germany in Britain before you jump to that conclusion. Those two countries are much worse off as their rural populations are relatively small and not very powerful. In the U.S. and Canada, we still have wilderness areas plus a strong and deep hunting & fishing ethos that isn't that far removed from the susbsistence lifestyle of our pioneers. We also have political systems that respond to $$$ clout (you moreso than us) vs. the British and especially the German proportional reporesentation system where every crackpot with a cause can get a government funded political soapbox. The multi-billion dollar hunting and fishing industries here hopefully won't roll over play dead the way they did over there.
The animal rights fascists are made up of a small group of fanatics that are immune to any form of persuasion, however, they have a second tier of supporters made up of mostly urban, university educated females and a third tier composed mostly of primary school children who they target actively. Keep in mind that most primary school teachers fit the second tier domgraphic so the school system has a potential built-in cadre of ARFs. Anglers and hunters with school age children should keep a close watch on what they're being fed in the way of ARF propaganda.
The ARF philosophy is riddled with contradictions and hypocrisy but I seldom see anyone in the press taken them up on it, especially the second tier supporters who are usually woefully ignorant of the full extent of the ARF platform. For example, a high percentage of second tier supporters are pet owners yet they support a cause that equates pet ownership with slavery.
Lastly, hunters & anglers need better performance out of lobby groups to head these people off. The worst thing you can do is to do nothing. Never assume they can't win, or it can never happen here as it is already happened in Ontario. The ARF lobbied successfully campaigned to have the spring bear hunt cancelled based on a pack of lies and supported by some stupid politicians.
Did anyone hear about the peta member at a bass tournament in Oregon...
A guy dressed as a trout was taking the bags of bass yet to be weighed and broke equiptment of the anglers.
He ended up with charges of property damage, disturbing the peace, a hefty fine and jail time.
It must be sad freakish existence to be a peta member, they just weren't opened to a world beyond their point of view as a child, or the lack of meat has gone to their heads.
By far the most important thing, as mentioned previously, is getting your kids involved in the outdoors and better yet friends' kids and neighbors who aren't exposed to fishing and hunting. I am sure if the peta member's parents took the kid fishing once in a while, this wouldn't even be an issue.
Last time I was up in Gaspe I watched this guy slapping mosquitoes! He must have killed hundreds of them! What a horrible site, made me sick! :lildevl:
Seriously though, It’s too bad we could not use these clowns. If their energy could be somehow directed against commercial over harvesting, some good could come out of the whole thing.
Couldn't get through all the dribble,,,,Bullsheeit (one word,,three sylables) Obviously, I got as far as "it may not be safe for them (PETA) in Idaho." Great idea. Lets figure out a way to get them to try and picket Idaho rivers. Especially in the Cor D' Lane area. :hihi: :hihi:
"3) Ask the Boy Scouts to Retire Their Fishing Merit Badge
By offering a "fishing" merit badge, the Boy Scouts of America teach boys that hooking, suffocating, and killing animals is acceptable. " OMG
Peta has got to be the most unamerican group to walk this earth. Fish are meant to be eaten, why else would they be here. No wait maybe we should eat nothing but vegies and greens so we can be anerexic salad shooters.
peta needs to stop being such weiners and get lives.
To some extent we're working for the same thing, which is habitat reclaimation, but how can you condemn fishing which generates alot of money back to the environment, with liscenses and stamps as well as private funding by avid outdoorsmen? It's thousands upon thousands more dollars than peta puts out.
Yes its me the aptly named troll. Ya know my rights as a sportsmen and outdoorsmen are important to me so much so that i tend to view the enviro-heads in our sport as loose canons that swing a little to far from the general good. Not to say that those of us that take conservation seriously are one step away from joining ther local chapter of green peace But in todays world you just cant tel whos with ya or against ya, and that makes me nervous! One day your disscusing catch and release the next there shoving it down your throat and making laws that make it mandatory. Im sure alot of fishermen out there can remember when those of us that love our sport did these things without having to be told. So i say watch out for these people. Keep one eye on your line and the other on your local goverment that can change your favorite sport into a story that starts " Remember when".
"It's thousands upon thousands more dollars than peta puts out."
Why is it so difficult for "those people" to understand that were it not for our license fees, Dingle Johnson and all the other fees, taxes, etc, generated by sportsmen, there would be no money to support any of the wild life programs. NONE! That would leave the government desparate for funding. (so what else is new?) Which would mean that everyone, even the animal/bird watchers/photographers, rafters, swimmers, backpackers, would all have to pay a healthy fee just to enter the forest. :Eyecrazy:
Of course, if I had my way, they would all have to pay the same as we do.
