Cool Creating a monster...?

I took my 14 YO son out for a fishing trip and created a fishing machine/monster

Yesterday I met up with the Old Man at a selective gear lake near my home with the intent to baptise my son in the joys (rigors) of fly-fishing. We took the canoe which was a real problem, at first, how to both fish without capsizing :eyecrazy: . We almost decided to call it a day when another fisherman showed up and starting catching way too many fish! So Dad decided to bite the bullet and paddle the boy (young man) around with the hopes of duplicating the other's success. About 45 minutes into our renewed effort (and after tying on one of the Old Man's leech creations) he got a strong pull and proceeded to bring to hand a beautiful 16 - 17 inch rainbow as fat as I have ever seen. Not too long after he caught another about 14 inches. Things slowed as the weather changed to bright sunlight and a strong wind, clearing the lake of fisherman.

Two gorgeous fish from a lake that I had previously held with great distain. Now my son is pressing for his own float tube and "let's do it again, Dad!" I got a new fishing buddy .

...and the most important part - he told me that he would rather get a new 4 wt. and float tube INSTEAD of the previously got-to-have new gaming computer! God I love it!

Congratulations WS, I will be working on two of my sons in the Black Hills in two weeks. Got to get them away from technology.

Wait till he finds some of your fly fishing catalogs laying around.
"Dad I think I need a new "expensive brand name" fly rod. I need a faster action"
"Dad, my fly line is cracked"
"Dad, can I borrow your rod for a trip with my friends?"

What you'd like to hear:
"Dad, I'm going to be tying flies all weekend. Is there anything you need?"
"Dad, I just mowed yards all summer saving for a new rod"
" Dad, I just got a $500 tip from my summer guiding job"

"Dad, you're my favorite fishing buddy"

Have fun with him. some of my fondest memories are fishing with my dad.

John

Very nice. Another quote you can look forward to hearing is "Dad, you work too much. Why don't we fish more?"

This one always drew dirty looks from my mother.

John,

Although the fish weren't as large as your son, Will's, any trout in Western Washington over 14" is quite respectable from what I understand. What if the next one is only 8", a let-down? A father's quandary...

Speaking of which, after he caught the first one I was sorely tempted to try my hand but thought the added competition might not be so good. After his second fish, I'm glad I didn't least he bring to hand more than I .

...and sorry for the negativism of those posts directly/indirectly aimed at those in the guiding business who may or may not hold to my views on the ethicasy of certain fishing techniques.

Good Job, he should be hooked on flyfishing for life!
I'm 14 as well, and I've been hooked on flyfishing since I was around 4.
I've learned a lot over the short time...

Watersprite:

A 16" fish is a HUGE fish!!!

You should fish with him next time. Maybe break off your hook point? Nothing beats the thrill of out fishing Dad and getting to brag to Mom about it.

Enjoy!!!

John

Oh the shame...

Took the 14 YO out again to our secret lake for some early morning fishing. The boy hooked into 5 and landed 3, I struck out entirely. Not even a strike and we fished the same flies.

The young man wanted a midmorning snack so we beached and I took out "his" boat and "his" rod and made three circuits - nada. Went back and switched back to our original setups. The boy was not more than five minutes from shore when he had his third and last hookup for the day.

If it wasn't so paganistic I would have choked a chicken when I returned home. Still might, I need some hackle.
