Thumbs up Panfish Poppers

A recent issue of The Fisherman had an article about fly fishing for smallmouth bass. It suggested using those little panfish poppers, so I tried it out in one of my favorite bass lakes. I caught more bass than panfish! No monsters, but several largemouths and a couple smallmouths up to 2 pounds. I also caught a few crappie, rock bass, sunfish and pickerel. Gotta love those topwater hits!

Q,last summer up in Me. on my annual vacation on a great smallie lake, the only thing that worked were poppers. In the middle of the day evan. Violent strikes. Bought a couple at Orvis in W. Concord. Very reasonable. I could make them I guess too.

I feel that vibe, Q! It's becoming apparent to me that the pond near my new home is full of fish that just can't help coming up for a look at a popper. I've been using a rather large size, so it's been mostly bass, but any of the sunfish that I've hooked have been some of the largest I've ever seen.

Glad to hear of your success.

Quentin, of course from previous correspondence you know my feelings on topwater flies: they just kick @$$! Frog colors have always been my main producers, but red/white ranks a very close #2. These observations are purely because I tie and own more of those patterns, because sometimes color appears to matter very little, particularly to largemouth and spots, and that goes for pickerel as well. I figure smallies are probably the same way. If I could fish one type of fly year round, it would be a popper. Love those smashing strikes!

My friend gave me a bunch of those little foam bodied poppers in assorted colors. The one I started with had a green body with green & white tail. It kicked butt, so after it was destroyed by a smallie I tied on another one just like it. I think I've got a couple red & white ones to try out too
