Crab Legs

Another crab question -

Many crab patterns use rubber or hackle for legs and are tied with the crab "sideways" to give it the "swimming crab" look. This would tend to cause the legs on one side of the fly to bend towards the body of the crab when the line is pulled or the current pulls against the fly. Based on my observations, a real crab extends its legs out to both sides when it swims. That is, the legs on the "leading" side of the crab point in the direction that the crab is headed. They do not flex back towards the body. I thought this may have something to do with the fish's decision to commit to eating the fly or not, especially after they've seen or eaten a few crab flies already. Any thoughts on whether the fish seem to notice (or care) that some of the legs bend the wrong way?

I think I'll tie some experimental crab flies and see how they stack up vs. the established patterns.
