Mystic River (MA) Report 5/30

Launched my Kayak in the Mystic River (the one in Somerville, not the one in Mystic, CT) and headed out. In order to increase my chances of catching fish, I left the camera and tape measure behind. Bait guys were all around the dam slamming fish on live or dead herring drifted with the outgoing tide. Shore guys were having a rough time, but everyone out in crafts (canoes to bay cruisers) were doing well. I was having a slow evening and was in the middle of watching a youngster pull on a nice fish against the current when my drifting fly behind me was slammed. Rod doubled over and fight was on. After a mini Natucket sleigh ride, I had the fish boat side trying not to high stick it and blow up my 8 wt. So much for that plan, gun shot sound and my rod is in two with the fish still attached. Hand over hand the last 8 feet of line comes in and I lip a nice (later measured against my kayak) 30" striper. Anyone have tips for landing bigger fish while in the Yak?

I caught the fish on a flatwing inspired by Kenney/Todd of basically a chartruse grizzly, a natural, an olive saddle tied flat with dark, light blue and olive bucktail for a head. A little flash an it looked very good in the water. Now I see what all the hub bub is about the flatwings and natural materials, they really move in the water!

Nick you houndog! How to go. That's technically No. Shore you know since you're near the NORTH End. Hey MArvin you reading this? I always wondered how far up the Mystic they go? There's a boat launch at Wellington Circle I could put in. I'll bring a can of mace.

Definitely a north shore fish. North of Boston is North Shore. The outflow of the damn was damn fresh! Never caught a striper in such conditions, and was SHOCKED to hear the Bluefish follow the menhaden up their and even passed the damn into the fresh water.

Winter Hill Yacht Club is right there, not sure how they put their boats in, but they must do it some way.
