Swap miester fly: Olive wooly bugger

This is a fly I tied up for John in appreciation of his efforts as swap miester. I'm sure most of us have used the wooly bugger at one time or another and maybe even some have tied a few up, but here's the recipe anyway:

Hook: 2XL streamer, sizes 2-10 (here, a size 6)
Thread: Olive Dynacord, 6/0
Tail: Olive marabou
Rib: Fine copper wire
Body: Olive sparkle dubbing
Legs: Olive saddle hackle, palmered

1. Attach the thread to the hook and build up a nice base near the bend. Select a clump of marabou and tie it in for the tail.

2. Tie in the copper wire just ahead of the tail.

3. Dub the body forward to just behind the eye. Leave enough room for the saddle hackle and a whip finish at the end.

4. Tie in the saddle hackle at the front of the fly. Make three turns at the front, and then wrap it backwards towards the rear. Once the hackle reaches the tail tie-in point, hold onto the free tip and start wrapping the copper wire forward. This will secure the hackle in place.

5. When the ribbing reaches the front of the fly, tie it off and trim the excess. Also trim the excess saddle hackle.

6. Whip finish and cement if desired.

This pattern can be weighted with wraps, bead heads, and cone heads to get even more depth. The fly pictured is unweighted, which is how I like to fish them in shallow still waters.

Thanks again to John for the imaging!
