thinning silicone

Saw somwhere something about a technique you can use to thin silicone to get a softex like consistency. Thought it might be interesing to try on some epoxy baitfish.

Not sure of the product to use for the thinning though. Turpentine??

Anyone have any experience with this and the pros/cons?

While I'm not familiar with thinning silicone per se; if it is similar to Goop, then you can thin it with toulene. This essentially gives you flexament, which is rubbery, saturates the thread, and is what I use exclusively on finishing fly heads.

I will try thinning some silicone with toulene in the next few days and give you a report.

Bob Pink really likes some stuff called devil sauce. I think he put the recipe on the SW fly tying board.

Probably goes without saying, but careful w/ that toulene. Nasty stuff.

Don't know if it gets you the thinning you desire, but photoflow works beautifully at managing and manipulating silicone. I use some GE bathroom silicone from the squeeze tube, and a little photoflow liquid from the local camera shop and, voila, mullet flies like Mr. Popovics creates (well, ok, not quite...).
