Spring action

I did my first shad float of the season on Sunday with my wife Heidi.
I say shad float because that is ostensibly what we were looking for,
but did not find. A few were caught at the boat ramp in Weldon (one
that I saw) and I saw a few running in some of the rapids, but nothing
in any appreciable numbers. It's way early yet and we were really doing
it for the excuse to do something outside together for a change. The
water is low but it has been for the past few years at this time of
year. I expect everything to go off as it always does.

On a related note, if you are going to be anywhere near Raleigh, NC on April 26 and 27 you should try to get to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for the following:

This is from Tom Earnhardt:

AN EVENING WITH THE MASTERS
Friday, April 26, 2002

All good anglers are biologists...especially fly-fishermen, who tie
their own flies. Join three of the nation's best anglers and fly tiers,
Lefty Kreh, Bob Clouser, and Bob Popovics, as they discuss fish,
habitat, natural foods and their imitations. These men are the designers
of many of the most popular fly patterns and have written, or been the
subject of, many books, articles, and videos. This evening program, and
reception, will be of interest to all anglers from North Carolina's
mountain trout streams to the Gulf Stream. Don't miss this rare
opportunity to meet and learn from three of the sport's best and most
beloved characters on the same stage.

MASTERS TIE UP MUSEUM
Saturday, April 27, 2002

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced fly tier, or just a lover of
streams, lakes and coastal estuaries, Lefty Kreh, Bob Clouser, and Bob
Popovics will educate and entertain you. From 10:00 am until 4:00 PM
three of the best know angler/tiers in the world will show you what fish
eat and why. Staff members of the Museum, other educators, and some of
the finest fly tiers from the region will assist them. This program, for
children of all ages, will feature tying tables and materials for those
who want to learn this beautiful art, and fly casting demonstrations for
those who want to improve their casting and fly presentation.

To reserve your spot call Barbara at the museum. (919 733 7450 x377). She is now taking reservations for the Friday evening session.
