Finalized Times for the Steelhead Bus

The WFFC is underwriting 75% of the cost of a bus to take people down to Vancouver for the WDFW Wild Steelhead Release Rules Change Hearings, December 8, 2001.

The cost is $10 plus an optional tip to the bus driver of $2-3.

Here is the final schedule:

The bus will depart Northgate Park & Ride at 8:15 am
The bus will depart Federal Way Park & Ride at 8:45am
The bus will arrive in Vancouver for the hearings (in time for lunch) at 11:30 am
The bus will depart Vancouver at approximately 4:00pm (after hearings)
The bus will stop at the Fish Tale Brewery in Olympia for refreshments
The bus will return to Federal Way at ~8:00pm
The bus will return to Northgate at ~8:30pm

To reserve a seat, please call Jay Deeds at (360) 830-4885 or email him at: thedeeds@hotmail.com

It is critical that we have a strong showing at this hearing. We need to support the Commission members who are voting to make wild steelhead catch and release mandatory throughout the state.

This is our best (and maybe last) opportunity to turn into action something we've been talking about for years.

Leland.

Thanks Leland,

This is such a huge opportunity and I hope the bus is packed. I remember in the late 80's there was a similar hearing concerning salmon / steelhead regulations downtown. If I am not mistaken it was brought to people's attention by long live the kings http://www.longlivethekings.org at the sportsmen's show. They've been around a while, wow.

Anyway, it was kind of a slow day at work so a few of us ran up I-5 to attend the meeting. When we got there literally busloads of commercial fishermen came up and completely took over the hearing. They were not freindly to sportsmen by any means, in fact there was a slight air of animosity. This meeting was not held on a weekend so many who were passionate about protecting the runs were at work and unable to show their support. It was a total disaster for the sportsmen and conservationists who were there, what few were there that is.

What is so totally cool about this is that now the bus is on the right side of the issue. This is not to say that commercial anglers are bad, just organized. And in majority driven processes it's all about who shows up. If you can't beat the lobbyists join 'em.

The crux of the issue is, if people don't put their money where their mouth is then they won't really have a right to complain about what they get. This is a historic event for steelheading in the pacific northwest.

"Godspeed"

Thanks, Juro. You're right, this is a watershed moment. This is what the WSC has fought for and is about to come to fruition. If it doesn't . . . I shudder to think.

The letters are good and will help, but bodies is what we need this time. We must outnumber the wild steelhead killers. If we don't, our yes votes on the commission will cave.

Leland.
