Boston Harbor

The Harbor has been sort of hot and cold, up and down, all summer long. This past week, we had great striper action at the beginning of the week and very slow fishing toward the tail end.Yesterday, we had fish for brief while in Dorchester Bay then had to work for them for the rest of the morning. Today, there was some early action in Dorchester, then great fishing for bass and blues, mainly bluefish, offshore. The blues were gorging themselves, as only blues can do, on large silversides which are the predominant bait right now. No sign of peanut bunker yet.
I'm back to work at Duxbury high school tomorrow morning but will continue to charter on the weekends and the occasional late afternoon through mid-October.

Thanks for the update, and please let us know when the pea bunker get into the harbor. We can get a sense of the timing for them to get there based on their arrival on the Cape, etc.

On the topic of bunker, do you see the large bunker in the harbor each year like we did in the 70's and 80's?

Juro,

I've heard rumors of guys netting pogies in Quincy Bay but actually haven't seen much of this. About a week ago, I saw a very large school of bait off the Deer I. flats near the airport which I thought were pogies but may have been butterfish. Not sure... Most of the time, folks are using herring which have been abundant this year.

Thanks for the reply Capt., although I don't have any scientific data and I am not a bait fisherman I worry that the hordes of big pogies that were around when I was a young fisherman are gone now that I am older.

I remember Hingham Harbor, Boston Harbor, and the north shore up into Maine being solid bunker.

Anyway it's great to see a strong fishery in the harbor this year, it's really cool that you can catch great gamefish from the scenic north shore to the shadows of skyscrapers to the south shore's beaches and bays.

I look forward to reading more of your reports thru the season.
