Rhody week in review

Itís safe to say the fall migration has started. Maybe itís too early to detect any movement, but they sure are active and feeding themselves. You name it; you can catch it in Rhode Island right now.

Bass

Bass conditions along the south shore of Rhode Island have stepped up. With the emergence of mullet baitfish, numerous size bass, as large as 30 pounds, have been showing in the surf. Eel slingerís continue to fish well during nighttime hours, especial near the breachways. Pluggerís have done well at daybreak. The bite curtails into the morning. Bass continue to co-operate for deep-water trollers well into the morning in deeper water. Fishing the upper bay seems less prudent unless you fish some kind of structure away from the blues.

False Albacore

If stripers are not your bag, than try albie fishing. West Wall continues to be the Mecca of shore bound anglers. Dozens of pods of albies have shown around the outside wall this week. There have been numerous hook-ups for both spinners and fly rodders alike. The middle wall and the openings of the channels are a great bet for boaters too.

Bluefish

Toss a hook anywhere in the upper bay and chances are a bluefish will follow. The old standbys are still producing. Sabinís Point, Barrington Beach, Conimicut Point, these are just a few of the better areas. Boaters are having a blast fishing south of Barrington Beach. There are a lot of Ďem out there so be careful with your craft. Run & gun is not the preferred method, but it quickly turns into that. Larger size blues are ravaging the ocean shore, but not in any great numbers as the bay.
