Heading to Cabo!

I'm heading to Cabo San Lucas for a week at the end of March. Does anyone have any recommendations? I hear you can rent a panga pretty cheap. Does anyone know of any guides who specialize in flyfishing? I don't want to get stuck on "Joe Mackerel Chunks" boat if you know what I mean.

RE:Heading to Cabo!

Hi Steve

I did a week out there with Baja Anglers in November '98. They specialize in s/w flyfishing. I think you can book by the day.

Contact Grant Hartman at http://www.baja-anglers.com.

From what I can make out, very few panga guys understand fly fishing and want to kill everything you catch - could work out less $$$ though?

We were there during El Nino which screwed up the billfishing but we had a great time on yellow fin tuna up to 20lb at the arch. Also the inshore roosterfish and siera macks can be fantastic.

Cabo is a nice town with some very nice restaurants and shopping for wives / significant others.

Yo! Adrian,
Thanks for the info. I've been e-mailing Baja-Anglers for a couple of weeks. They look like a class act. Do you know if there are panga's for rent without the guide?
Thanks again!

Steve,

Not sure about solo rentals but these guys may be worth a look - rates seem competitive:

Yes, Baja-Anglers is a class operation - good skippers who understand flyfishing - smooth riding Glacier Bay cats etc.

Good luck!

RE:Heading to Cabo!

I don't think that there is much to gain even if you could take a panga out your self. The skipper is the cheapest but most valuable part of the equasion.
If you speak spanish, you will have a better time with any captain. In the Pisces fleet, I have heard that Andrea, Gonzallo and Beto are all fly freindly.
I have heard very good things about Baja Anglers. They are not cheap, but the captain, boat, and gear are as good as it gets. Their American base is at Lee's Ferry Anglers in A.Z. Give them a call(Trey and Wendy Gunn). They advertise in all the mags.

Call me even luckier when I tell you that my wife won a sales contest. I am basically her "arm candy" at night and I'll be fishing all day. Wooohoo!
