Got my swap flies today!

Bob was good enough to bring the swap flies to the show, so I got more than my bag of show goodies today - I also ended up heading home with an excellent assortment of SWFF flies that I can't wait to fish this season! In fact the season can't start fast enough. Let's all extend a big thank you to Bob Pink for arranging the swap! He will be offered a guided trip from one of our sponsors for the contribution of time, effort and great photographs!

listed in the order they come out of the box...

GregO - chartreuse and angel hair gurgler... yooheah, topwater time! WHat could be better than a chug-chug>BLAM< right about now?

Bob Pink - 2-3 Feather Flatwing... tied like the classics, nice touch with the golden pheasant. A reminder to me that there is life beyond synthetics [TIC].

John Desjardins - Fishskin Bug variant... not only does the skin look great, it prevents fouling too. The complex layering of materials adds a lot of realism. Very innovative pattern!

Pete Lavoilette - Split tail squid... wow! this veteran of the rip trip shows us what he learned in the Monomoy Point Rip brine and brings it home all the way from Calgary!

Ron Lomas - Flatwing Bunker/herring... Looked great in the picture, looks even better in person. This will be a goto fly for twilight fishing for sure.

Jeff G - Pollock Fly... Cow-chow! Tied to appeal to the meat-eaters of the roccus clan. Don't fish this one without a good drag!

And a special fly from our awesome sponsor Rich Soriano - Grass shrimp... Rich I wish I had this one night a couple of seasons ago when some large fish were sipping shrimp on a moonlit night in a river mouth cove on Nantucket Sound. I tried everything in the book but couldn't buy a hit. Finally, I got the black max flashlight out of the truck and watched for ripples and hit the switch... squeteague! And some respectably sized grass shrimp darting around as well. Since that night I always put a couple shrimp flies in the box. Thanks to you, so will everyone in the swap!

BTW - don't throw Rich's business card away!

RE:Got my swap flies today!

Bob was kind enough to drop my flies today on his way to a meeting, sans Viagra labelling.

Jeff G's Grocery Fly nice job with the deer hair head

Pete L's squid - I'm embarassed by my squid entry now...

Greg O's Juro Sand Eel: nice job Greg, you catch on quick

Bob's flat wing; it's like having an antique fly

I think I also got one of Juro's eels, I'll have to check my fly boxxes to see if it matches the one's I caught.

THanks to all of you, I definitely have been inspired to take my tying to the next level.

PS - Juro, that pollock fly was not mine, probably Mr. Ganguly.

Roop

RE:Got my swap flies today!

That's what I get for not putting my last name on the tying instructions I guess. Looking forward to getting my mail tonight. The pictures I have seen thus far look great.

RE:Got my swap flies today!

The Wollaston post office has been pretty efficient so far but I'd begin looking for them to arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday...(can't beat a hand delivery). Hope everyone has fun with them. I probably should have photgraphed what my dining room looked like with 21 boxes arranged so I could distribute goodies evenly
I got the rest of the film back today, will try to process the digital images into reasonable file sizes and forward to Juro within the next few days...

Thanks Everyone!

Remember Rich that I've seen your 'wall of fame' at the shop and I'm sure that anything that comes off your vise is sure to work just fine.....

Bob -

I gotta comment on the photography once again... it's incredible! I find myself going to the archives just to admire the great flies people have put forth, and the photowork makes this possible.

Awesome job!

RE:Got my swap flies today!

After a very bad work day, I came home to my box o' flies. Even the Mrs. to be admitted she was jealous of a "hobbey" where people made and sent me free "presents."

Amongst the mix were Roop's squid pattern, which will be destined for the rips off the Vineyard in early June;

Hawkeye's great looking crab pattern--hmmm...Monomoy, or maybe the impending Keys trip?;

a nice deep sandeel with no name attached(?);

a nice olive and white yak hair 1/2 n 1/2 (was that Pete? now I am getting confused since they aren't infront of me)--pretty much a goto fly for every Beantown Harbor guide;

John's bugskin varient--very cool looking and a novel design;

Rich's grass shrimp--think a searun brown would eat that???

I am forgetting one....it will come to me.

Mr. Pink--thanks again for the hard work!!!

Jeff

RE:Got my swap flies today!

Today was my lucky day for flies in the mail. What a great collection and some awsome work that makes me feel guilty about the artistry of my products.

I recieved:

Tom D's Ray's fly - an all around classic fish getter

Roop's lucky squid - I'm thinkin poppy in the spring and then the RIP

GregO's silver popper - it's just screaming for me to take it to the North river spit

Marvin's killer looking marabou pattern - I can't wait to see it's action and I know some fish out there are going to wish they never had

and finally two clouser patterns with no names that will see some great action at the spring clave on the Bass river. One of them used white and olive super hair and the other was chartreuse with a cactus chenile body (an interesting inovation that I will be trying)

Thanks to you all and I know you have added to my season's success!

I was like a little kid on Christmas morning!!!
I also had an awful day at work and coming home to see the great job that everyone did, brightened the evening. Can't wait to test them out.

RE:Got my swap flies today!

Bob, outstanding job on the swap all around. From the collection and distribution to the photos. I opened up a box full of flies all in their own packaging and most with tying directions. Very impressive.

1.) Deep sandeel - Juro?
2.) Ray's fly - ???
3.) Yak Hair Half & Half - Dave Williams
4.) Shrimp pattern - Fly Rod & Reel Outfitters Salty Dog?
5.) Maribou Olive & White baitfish - Marvin
6.) Cockroach Deciever - ???
7.) 2-3 Feather Flatwing - Bob Pink

Thanks everyone!

RE:Got my swap flies today!

I got mine today too. The only word to describe them properly is WOW!

Thanks every one.

I should have added the following last night but was brain dead after a couple of nights of disrupted sleep (3 month old with an ear infection). The flies I received were:

Ron Lomas Flatwing looks real nice, I can't wait to try it.
Bigcat's Small white fly, Looks great, I immeadiatly thought of tying one ~ 1/3 of the size for trout.
Pete L's squid this one is worthy of a double wow.
Marvins Maribou creation, one of those flies that you look at and instantly say "this will catch fish".
Shadfreak's cockroach deceiver, I love using grizzly hackle in deceivers & can't wait to try this one.
An Olive & White Clouser, always a great combination this one makes the ones I tie look shabby by comparison.
The Shrimp pattern another one of those flies that you look at and instantly say "this will catch fish".

RE:Got my swap flies today!

It was getting a little out of hand what with bagging all the flies individually. (When I saw what a nice job everyone did I didn't think it fair to have them bounced around in shipping) So, if someone sent the 'recipie' with thier flies, I was able to attach it to the bag. There were a few that didn't send directions ( AHEM, like Juro but he posted his on the BB long ago...! )

Again it was a lot of fun.

PS: Tod, for some unknown reason your box got left behind the back seat of my Tahoe. I dropped it off at the PO today, never fear they are on the way!
