First one hooked and landed!

The weather was chilly, cold in fact, the wind was wipping good, and the waves were scary but I wasn't going to let that stop me. After the casting clave I just had to put a fly to some fish and the power plant in Plymouth seemed to be just the ticket.

The footing was treacherous and the wave action made a dunking and serious consequences a real possibility so I stayed on the middle of the jetty and cast over the rocks. I really wasn't very hopeful because I just could not get into position for a proper placement but it really felt good to feel the spray and smell the salt air. After about 20 minutes of fruitless casting, drifting and retrieving I had a tap and then a big hit. The line flew through my fingers and then the drag started singing its sweet tune. I couldn't believe my luck, I mean I would have been happy with a twinkie or two but this was great!

I saw it roll about 150' out and I thought God that's huge. Timing my pressure with the waves I managed to work it out of the current and near the rocks. Then it was all finesse moves to keep my line clear of the sharp rocks and this forced me to do the first wading of the season and also helped me realize I had not patched all the leaks in my waders. After a few minutes I was able to grab the tippet and then work the beast onto the rocks. I didn't bring a tape measure but using my finger span I would estimate it to have been about 48". For posterity's sake I laid the 48" tangled mass of heavy lobster trap line and netting on a rock and took a photo with my new rod and it's first catch.

I hope I will be forgiven but I did not release it nor did I take it home with me. Truly a waste but I think their population is in no danger.

Here's hoping your first day on the water this season is at least as exciting as mine!

Sorry to disapoint but it wasn't an April fools joke. I really did land that thing and I will have the picture to prove it as soon as I finish up the roll.

LOL! You should have Roop bring his Rip Trip anchor over for a photo shoot - and put the pictures in the CHatham Angler's Club wall. I once caught a stringer by the metal ring with a 12 pound steelhead on the other end in Pulaski, true story.
