Does monomoy have the biggest sand eels?

The largest sand eels I've ever seen are those 10" hogs that the bass are stuffed with off Monomoy in August. Do they get that big elsewhere? The sand eels I see in other spots are usually half that size.

The offshore sandeels are equally as huge (making great whale and tuna food), but I have never seen them come inshore really anywhere other than Chatham/Monomoy...maybe some of the outer beaches.

The biggest I have ever seen on shore are on Race Point, thick as cuban cigars. They were big enough to cut cocktail weiners out of, not that I was that hungry or anything.

The Monomoy area may or may not have the biggest but what quantity ! I have indeed seen the sizes you've descibed above, but also huge clouds of them just under the surface east of Monomoy, in the rips of Bears'es, out in the cod grounds on the bottom, at the BB bouy 40 miles SE of Monomoy, it seems they are everywhere.
It is a good thing !

RE:Does monomoy have the biggest sand eels?

Hi Bruce - boy was that ever sand eel city out there last season! Ron, John and I were discussing that at the UFT meeting. The mad rush of fish into the bathtub inside Monomoy Islands seemed to indicate a hot season ahead, then the flats were kinda quiet unless you knew where to look and fall was a dud up inside.

Then I remember the morning I called you on the cell phone around 7:30am one morning...

"Bruce, anything going on?"

[paraphrased] "Uh YEAH! I got a charter of four and three have already put 40" fish on the boat. The fourth guy won't keep anything under because his of his buddies' fish, and we're going thru a lot of fish in the high thirties right now. The area is thick with sand eels. Gotta go we've got one on..."

I could just about see you from where I was on south beach, discounting any fish tale factor on my part; forgive me if I mis-quoted you - but I recall that was pretty close to the situation.

Next thing you know I was spending a lot more time on the Chatham outside, the adjacent Big Girl was deciphered by committee, and Bob Pink Jr hosted me to a full day on the edge of grand slamming just off the Chatham / South Beach coast.

I recall the horde of sand eels reported from Stellwagen early, then there were discussions of that raft moving south to the Chatham outside and your home waters - the rips. It seems the stripers came with and didn't leave until nature urged them south.

In the fall, two weeks before Nate Mantua of UW came to visit, Chatham outlet was choked with sand eels so thick that even seagulls were picking them out of the water with ease. That's a privilege usually reserved for terns. We were foul hooking sand eels out there. The stripers we were getting were in the 20 pound class with one morning bringing three bass over 40" from shore.

Man, do I need the season to BEGIN!

Exactly as you said Juro! Last summer Chatham was phat with those eels. There were times that I'd have 2 impaled on my fly on a retreive. I lost countless 8" olive flatwing deceivers on bass that I am afraid to guess the size. I used brass coneheads on them, and retreived along the bottom...bounce, bounce WHACK! ZZZZZZZZZZZZ! OH S***!!!!
