Sparse patterns

Well, all my big patterns are tied and ready. I think I need some sparse stuff to open the season with. I'm gonna fool around with some Rays Fly styles with maybe some Flashabou. You guys got any ideas on sparseness for the early season? Does it hold that some baitfish can be small in the early season (not counting big herringoids)?

RE:Sparse patterns

Here are a couple of my favorite pre-schoolie flies for areas where they aren't keyed-in on the big herring.

Steve - Nice work... that's also the kind of stuff I was banging those albies on when they get in their silverside kick. I can feel it now... strip.... strip-strip... >thwonk!<

RE:Sparse patterns

Here's what I ended up tying last night: some Ray's flies. Top one is standard. Then I had to fool around with the recipe. It has less white, some grey bucktail, some blue in the body wrap and a red gill effect.

Tom: It's a Gami Wide Gap hook. I can't remember the number, but it's marke Saltwater Wide Gap on the package. This model also makes excellent crab fly hooks.
