Harbor Island Clave

A while back BobP was talking about a Harbor Island clave on the newly expanded ferry system. What a great idea! As soon as the fishing picks up a little in the harbor, I am hoping he or someone with knowledge of the area will co-meister this with me.

There are three ferries: (a) Lynn Heritage State Park (b) Boston Long Wharf and (c) Hingham Shipyard. This will allow folks from north/mid/south to attend w/o driving far. Lovell's, Peddocks (Gallops, Georges, Bumpkin, Grape) are all on the route.

A shore lunch at a rendezvous point would be appropriate, cell phones and 2-ways would be useful, etc.

Again, this would be scheduled later to allow the harbor to recover from it's current amnesia. General information is available at (617) 223-8666. Get a harbor island map/brochure if you can, they are well done and very informative.

Any thoughts on currents, rips, shoals or features on one island that would make it better than another?

RE:Harbor Island Clave

You're talking a one day here right? Because some Islands do have camping. Sounds interesting.

Juro:

Great idea.........Jack Gartside should have his book out any day now that describes the fishing opportunities there. Laurie,Kylie and I where at the Aquarium the other day and stopped to speak with the attendant at the ferry booth. He said that some of the islands would be closed because of vandalism. I think he mentioned Peddocks and Grape but I cannot remember. Here is a web site that may give us more info:

www.fbhi.org

Either way, I am definitly interested..........

By closure did he mean daytime access -or- camping?

RE:Harbor Island Clave

That's unfortunate. I believe they allow for special arrangements, but in any case Lovells seems the better choice (I'll let BobP or someone else comment). It has a nice bar on the northwest corner and a really fishy point coming off the southeast corner. Besides I'd like to get as far from Nut Island as possible

I was thinking a day trip but camping is available and it would be a great way to maximize the peak fishing times. Arrive in the afternoon, set up, fish, night fish for the hardcores, dawn shift, shore/picnic lunch event, go home.

Day trip would require very little gear to lug on the ferry, not that my tent is any trouble to carry but it's something to think about. I must be getting old but drive-up camping is gaining favor with me. Boy Nickerson was an awesome campsite, and although Boneclave was fun it was a royal pain to get everything out to the island on boats.

Either way is fine, but camping introduces some thinking about payloads that would otherwise be coolers, food and drinks.

RE:Harbor Island Clave

JohnM,
Jack Gartside's new book is out- I've got a copy sitting on my desk at home. Also, we saw a bunch of folks on Peddocks (one of Jack's favorite islands) and other islands last week during the MetroWest CCA chapter's on the water monthly "meeting"- including some campers.

I know that Gallops is temporarily closed off due to asbestos contamination, but other than the (temporary) Tall Ships restrictions, I think access is still pretty good.

More info:

Lovell's Island (MDC)

Visitors to this 62-acre island can enjoy exploring the remains of Fort Standish and walk along trails that pass by dunes and salt-marsh woods. The island offers picnic areas, scenic overlooks, 11 campsites and a swimming beach.

http://www.magnet.state.ma.us/dem/parks/bhis.htm

The Islands fall under the National Park juristiction now in some way shape or form.
The number to talk to rangers and get info is:

617-223-8666

Ferry rides round tript cost $8.00

All.
I camped on Lovell's last year the best camp site is reserved for friends of the harbor. The ground is all black dirt. The beach front faceing Boston looks like a bombed out war zone lots of rubble. If the wind is right the jet noise from logan is deafening,
radioactive material was dumped there at one time still has some low level traces, tons of rabbits.
I would go with Grape it is mantained by a different agency.
jusy my opinion.
John

RE:Harbor Island Clave

Was by Lovells the other night on a sightseeing tour with the bride and noticed that they never put out the ferry dock this year. Suspect this means the Island is closed day & night (or at least is not supporting ferry access).

Thoughts on the parent-child theme proposed by Al_D:
Outstanding idea but probably limits us to a one-day clave (which is totally ok given the upside of being with your child(ren)). Also makes the issue of camping logistics moot.
Would be gret to use a ferry location that had a place nearby where we could all rendezvous after for a kids 'awards' ceremony, you know something for everybody.
