Elwha Hatchery Victory
For the benefit of my friends unfamiliar with Washington fishery tactics, the Chambers Creek strain is an inferior non-native strain to the Elwha that has been historically used throughout Washington state as a highly "harvestable" commodity, much like pellet-fed trout in other parts of the US are stocked into frog ponds to be caught on opening day.
They are inbred to the point of being nearly domesticated as far as steelhead go, living very safe short lives coming back smaller and spawning quickly, thus more survivably, providing meat for fishermen and Indian nets. Wild fish have been documented as having travelled nearly 7000 miles and can reach over 40 pounds in contrast.
The point of the Elwha dam removal is not to provide a meat factory of inferior strains, that approach is already rampant across the state. The opportunity, if not the intent is to provide a place where the realization of natures potential is realized after a century of imprisonment, unabated by human stupidity.
