There's doom, and there's gloom. I think we've got one without t'other. This cold front, heavy with wet too - is gloom at it's best for fly flingers in the region. Water temps are dropping fast and things are shakin' and bakin' in the instinct department of the great megamall of the sea, but as each pod moves on another follows suite.
Out with the days of stationary feed patterns, and in with the wild ride down the coast. There's intent in those big bass eyes and the fish are once again, where you find them. Clearly we need to adapt or lose.
Fall tactics:
a) target locations where you've had success in past migration seasons
b) plan itineraries with multiple venues en route, mix it up and sample several areas that are easy to strafe and go
c) target known bait holding regions: bayside bunker and eels on the flats / silversides in the bays, chatham sand eels and silversides, southside bunker in the bays and silversides, etc.
d) collect intelligence from available resources - web sites, papers, magazines (although printed information is usually out of date)
e) set up a stronger network of scouting and reporting among members for the season
f) gut feel and persistence, now more than ever
Between now and winter, it would be good to get a real tight network of scouting and reports - even spreading out across the region maybe.
