Fat lady no where near the Elizabeth Islands

Fished Naushon from Thursday night thru this morning, 99% on foot. Lots of fish around if you know where to look - Stripers & blues. Got some single handed and one on the spey.

While fishing one area yesterday there was an explosion up the shore by my friend. I figured seal. Walked over and asked what the hell just happened, and he said the biggest striper he had ever see had just tried to eat a 20" schoolie 2 feet from shore. I calmly walked up the coast past him, put on a 10" olive & white flat wing and started wading back down the coast, casting parallel to the shore the whole time. Fourth cast and WHAM - practically ripped the rod out of my hand. In backing before I knew what hit me. Head shakes and runs.

Got her close to shore 2x, but then she'd turn and just pull away.

Finally got her in close and almost wet my pants - what a hog! My personal best striper on a fly is 42" and this had that beat easily. Head like a horse, tail like a sail. Played gently, Got leader to rod tip and ... one head slap and 20 pound tippet popped ....

Saw her again this morning - same area chasing a schoolie I hooked, but never got another shot. Looked like a damn submarine.

Oh well - I think it's going to be a long winter dreaming about that beast ....

Get out there if you can - it's cold, but I have not seen that many stripers in a good while! Fat lady ain't singing yet!

Sometimes the one you lose is more memorable than the ones you land.
They certainly keep you coming back.

The Seal Beach real estate formerly known as the South Way might as well have been the Dead Sea [except for the gazzillion SEALS!!!]...

Great pics, Pete. Did you hike out there or are you experimenting with nu mode of transportation. If it were the 'old days' I would say it was a waste of film and paper to take pictures of seals but now its only some MB's on a card!!!! Down on Cape this coming weekend and most of next week, maybe we can spin some lies to each other?
