outfdated flares

My apologies if this has been covered before, but I thought it might be of some interest here.

I heard from Capt. Ruben over the weekend that you can be cited for having expired flares on board, even if you have an adequate number of “fresh dated” ones also.

I called the CG this morning to check, and was informed that this is correct. Guess I’ll have to store my old, backup ones in a manila envelope from now on…….

RE:outfdated flares

FYI:
All vessels used on coastal waters, the Great Lakes, territorial seas, and those waters connected directly to them, up to a point where a body of water is less than two miles wide, must be equipped with U.S.C.G. Approved visual distress signals. Vessels owned in the United States operating on the high seas must be equipped with U.S.C.G. Approved visual distress signals. The following vessels are not required to carry day signals but must carry night signals when operating from sunset to sunrise:

- Recreational boats less than 16 feet in length.

-Boats participating in organized events such as races, regattas, or marine parades(Claves?)

-Open sailboats less than 26 feet in length not equipped with propulsion machinery.

-Manually propelled boats.

RE:outfdated flares

At only 14', I'm technically exempt- I just believe in carrying a full complement of emergency equipment onboard on principle (given that I do H&S for a living).

As to the consistency of enforcement, Rocky replied on the other board that he'd been boarded, and was told that keeping the old ones as spares was a good idea.

??????????????
