New oil&gas threat to wild salmon - and aquaculture heats up

News from the Atlantic Salmon Federation

Call to Action:
Corridor Resources Inc. has received approval to proceed with seismic blasting in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to explore for gas and oil. This could cause serious problems for marine mammals and fish and also lead to full-scale drilling. Please call or e-mail your elected officials and party leaders to voice your opposition to seismic testing and your support for a moratorium on oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. ASFs Don Ivany and Don Hustins, President of the Salmonid Council of NL and LB, present the real facts on the toll aquaculture takes on wild Atlantic salmon in response to a letter by the Director of NLs Aquaculture Industry Association published on September 18 in the Telegram. To read both letters, go to:

Environment Canada has launched investigations into the alleged illegal use of the pesticide Cypermethrin in the Bay of Fundy. Federal government investigators found the chemical in weak and dying lobsters in the Bay of Fundy. Further inspections have found detectable levels of cypermethrin at two aquaculture sites in SW New Brunswick. This chemical, illegal for marine use in Canada, is used in other countries to combat sea lice.

It never ceases to amaze me how greed and self-interest of man destroys the wealth of our planet in the name of short-sighted gains. I'd wager that there is illegal use of cypermethrin in all salmon farming operations worldwide and the pesticides are infiltrating the ecosystem.

Just as a reminder, the synthetic substance DDT originated as a highly effective pesticide!
