Monomoy "shootout" tournament

Not sure how I feel about this...

http://www.themonomoyshootout.com/

Any catch and KILL tournament seems a little unnecessary to me but there are plenty of bass around and it is within the bounds of the law. I think having thousands of dollars in prizes will motivate a larger number of fish to be killed but then again people will kill their legal catch for other reasons too.

Thoughts?

I have a personal dslike for fishing tournaments that are not catch-and-release; however, last year's donation of bass filets to the Chatham Food Pantry ostensibly from the tournament certainly makes it more palatable.

While I doubt this tournament will have much of an impact of the fish stocks, in general I am not in favor of anything that encourages people to keep fish. Just seems unnecessary for a tournament.

What's to prevent culling a dead fish for a larger one? Why can't it be catch and release?

Yeah I don't know why it can't be c&r, it makes it a little more complicated but it's definitely worth it

Don't like this and I have a great dislike for fish counters and competitive fishing.
Run and gun fishing and fishing for money is not for me. The excuse is to donate the fish to the food pantry to make the tournament more acceptable .

Competition

Competition is an anathema to the spirit of our sport, I know it's fun, but it teaches the wrong message, sorry.

So we agree that a C&R tournamnt is passe' and not the de jeure thing today. Okay, so does a flyfishing forum have any clout on this archaic man vs. fish endeavor? I guess the answer is that we voice our opinion and convey it to the tournament organizers. It seems strange that we have the enlightened Bass Pro Circuit that has a weight-in and then releases all fish, and we have in our back yard a catch and hold tournament. I'm not a greenie because I keep a couple of fish a year, but I really get upset when they are kept for the hero shot, frozen and discarded the following year.

Tournament fishing is little more than a lame excuse for ego satisfaction. I am smarter, better and maybe luckier than everyone else and I should be regarded as the best of the best. Bullsnot!!!!! It prostitutes the art of fishing and promotes the act of catching.
Obviously I have some strong feelings about tournament fishing and particularly the participants thereof but because of the genteel nature of this site I have severely edited my response. Let the sponsors know of our intent to boycott their products.

Time to take a 'slug' of Bromo to get the taste of 'bile' out of my throat!

This is the first time I heard about it although I see this is the second year... Take a look at the sponsors...and we have a "yacht" club as a weigh in...It is interesting that there are so few boats and I really did not recognize any of the boat Captains. Knowing so many in Chatham it is interesting that many do not participate. I dislike tournaments anyway....next thing you will see official uniforms with the sponsors name on them.....I am somewhat wary of events that boast of Charity donations....like the Palm Beach society season with lavish parties that claim they are done for charities... they are done for people to feel like they belong...atleast there. I thought that Chatham had escaped the fishing tournament mentality and now I see that I was wrong. Each to their own I suppose.

I have contacted the listed sponsors , via email, and expressed my displeasure with their sponsorship. Also stated that I would not avail myself of their services/product and would be very quick to advise others to do the same. Probably will have no effect but I feel better having done so.

Thumbs down Tournaments SUCK...

'sent to the sponsors...

Regarding your "sponsorship"...
The concept of a Monomoy Shootout is absolutely reprehensible and uncalled for...
Bass Master's here we come...
Kill Tournaments bring everything that is WRONG and killing fish for ego [and cash] is deplorable...
I will actively avoid shopping at your facility and won't hesitate to share my feelings...
