Weekend CT/RI report

My friend Bert and I hit the Connecticut River mouth on Friday and the CT/RI border today looking for stripers. Friday the river was stained from some rain over the previous two days, so the fish were a bit tough to find, but once found they were pretty willing for small herring flies.

Today's trip was on crystal clear flats on the CT/RI border. There were some good numbers of fish on the flats, but they were picky eaters. There aren't any sand eels there yet so there was no concentrated mass of bait, which I think made the fish less aggressive. We caught some fish, and I lost two fifteen pound fish that were each on for about three minutes before they came unbuttoned. The hooks were sharp, so I guess that the fights just wore holes in their mouths....

Didn't have the camera today, but the size of the fish in the pictures below at the mouth of the river Friday are representative of what we caught both days...not lots of fish, but pretty good quality.

Mark, thanks for the post. Why don't you and Bert come to the clave this weekend? Haven't seen you guys on the Cape in several years.

I can't speak for Bert, but I already have commitments this weekend with someone on the Cape to help with home repairs. My dad will be coming down from Maine to lend his expertise...if we have some time to fish, it will be limited and probably after dark.

I'm sure that you guys will catch plenty of fish...it sounds like things are really heating up in the area.
