GLoomis

Wow. As of December 1st 2009, GLoomis has sold out to Shimano! Trying times for the fly fishing industry. I called to send a in a Syncrotech fly reel for servicing and the guy asked me if it was a front or rear drag model. I told him it was a 8-9-10 GL and he didn't know what I was talking about. I had to tell him it was a fly reel before he understood. Yikes!!!!!

Hey Phil
I thought that Loomis sold out to Shimano years ago.

I sent back a Nautikos rod which had failed for a replacement over the summer. Got a one piece Pro in it's place for the boat. Totally different warranty procedure and I spoke to a person in Woodland, Wa. The phone number was also different.

Indeed, GLoomis has been owned by Shimano for over a decade. The crunch in the economy has caused a lot of businesses to assess ways to reduce overhead costs. Since Loomis and Shimano had been running as two completely separate entities since the Shimano purchase, it made perfectly good sense to do some combining and minimize the number of employees, departments, etc. in the US. They are still going through some of the pains of that process, and quite likely will for awhile. Let's hope by the end of the year things will be reasonably normal with them. Of course, it's entirely possible that won't ever happen, but I'm sure it's Shimano's intent to do the best they can to make it happen. Companies that don't make these types of decisions in today's world often don't survive at all. It won't be easy, but we need to give them the time to get everyone on board and up to speed on things. On too many boards and forums I've read guys who had already given up hope on the Loomis name. Hang in there.

Thanks for the info. I called them back and started asking new questions. Come to find out the Syncrotech drag parts are no longer available. They are exchanging mu 8-9-10 GL for the Current 9-10 combo with a spare spool! If at first you don't succeed just try another person! I have always loved the G Loomis customer service experience. And, I'll have it just in time for an Acklins Island experience.

If you contact Loomis customer service, you'll get a response from a Shimano rep, not a Loomis person.

The good news is, I asked them about using a trout rod in saltwater for bonefish and they said to wash it down thoroughly, but if it still corrodes, they'll replace it free.

Glad to see this post. I have a Syncrotech 8,9,10 that I sent to them before and it came back still not working as it should. Seems I need to follow up and hopefully get the same exchage you did.
