Cape trip 8/9 what size/color sandeels

Will be up next week, what size and color sandeel is good for this time of year?
Last time up FredA was kind enough to show me around and the sandeel used were small 2-3", very sparse.

Jim

Fred is correct, if blindcasting during the day. Brown or olve over white, size 2 or 4 clousers. If the peanut bunker are around, then that is the "go to" fly. If fishing the flats, size 2 or 4 crab patterns are a good option. Night time, big dark-colored flies get their attention.

I've been doing multiple legal fish every outing with the regular 6" deep eel in green or tan. Spend your time following my " four point system" -

1) find fish (presence of fish)
2) focus on fish who are in the mood to eat
3) perfect your presentation (placement, retrieve, direction of retrieve relative to current, etc)
4) use the right fly

Good luck!

I went to get some white super hair for the bottom of the sand eels, but there was only krystal flash pearl which I think is too flashy. Can it be substituted with tan hackle with an overlay of olive superhair?

I twisted one up and it looks good. 2 tan saddle hackles, a couple strands of flash and 1 light dunn saddle hackle for the top and some eyes, sparse. I will let you know how it works.

Careful how you blend dissimilar materials. Bucktail and hackles would be a better mix if you can't find good synthetic.
