Monomoy t-o-a-d

Took the Rip Ryder out to North Monomoy today and realized it's not officially striper season until I go spend the day out there. To me the pure and simple natural beauty is unmatched anywhere on the eastern seaboard where a fly rod has meaning. As far as I am concerned, it's the proving ground of sight fishing.

We walked over miles of flats and although the fishing wasn't easy it was deeply satisfying. I was surprised by stuff I had never seen before despite being a North Monomoy regular and guide for years - like hordes of seagulls grazing greedily on the caviar of millions of horseshoe crab eggs lining the beaches right now.

In the dim light and ripple the fish we did see were aggressive albeit very hard to see. Who knows how many were actually there but you take what you can get under such conditions and I spotted a large form with the unmistakable stealthy slither and happened to make a perfect cast with the same deep eel I've been fishing since last September - WHUMP fish on!

This beast measured 37" but looked every bit of 40" in the water, churning things up like a tide rip and tearing into the backing repeatedly over the shallow flat. Epic battle wading and on the flats... something about it I like better than tide rips or deep water.

Anyway... here she is, although I am into double-digits for keepers this year this one is certainly the most memorable one so far and the way I see it North Monomoy is still the gem she was until the dog days set in, and I can't wait to fish it again.

That head is huge unless you've got hands like a G.I. Joe!

Can't wait to get out there again, Juro. See you in a few days perhaps?

Nice!
Juro.... ever consider writing a book on flats fishing? I think it would be a good read.

Thanks guys -

BTW, with Art's report and what I saw I can safely predict that there is some insanity about to go down in the refuge over the next several days. Those non-canal running hordes are going to arrive at the 'trap' and will need to make the u-turn out to continue since there is no outlet. The water temps are very good right now and there is a fair amount of bait caught up in there. NM flats are gorgeous.

Depending on location, tides and luck the Big Brother's Day could be epic this weekend as well.

If sunlight is going to be in the equation I'm burning a vacation day to indulge in the arrival of all those big bass to the refuge if I can dial into the timing of their arrival.

Steveo your timing could very well be perfect, we'll see.
