Hudson River Striper Debate

From RiverCurrents Online

HUDSON RIVER: Massachusetts Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy are asking for a detailed environmental study by the Army Corps of Engineers of a $350 million pier and park project on the Hudson River in Manhattan's West Side, which they fear would disrupt spawning for fish such as striped bass.

In response, a top aide to New York Mayor Giuliani, has accused Kennedy and Kerry of “meddling and causing delays,” and has assured them that New York officials will make sure that the environment is protected, reports the Boston Globe (1/13). Intended to revitalize the little-used waterfront from Manhattan's Battery Park to 59th Street, the project has the support of some mainstream environmental groups, while other environmentalists fear the large-scale private development that might result from the project.

Massachusetts fishermen, in particular, fear the impact of the project on the area which supports a “feeding area and nursery for at least 15 fish species from bass to eel to shad, many of which are ultimately caught in the waters off New England.”

RE:Hudson River Striper Debate

Juro,
I have to go to Tarrytown a lot for work. Any experience fishing down that way? I've got overnight accomodations in Croton (sister's house)just about on the river, year round.

Seems like the right place would be perfect for spey rod
work. The river is dauntingly wide that close to NYC. The
Hudson has come way back from where it was in the seventies
It's a great resource to explore and I hear the striper action heats up earlier then the Cape in the spring , as you would expect.

See ya,

Jay
