Acres of bait

Here's what I saw...

The big natural weir we call the tub has rounded up a phenomenal amount of big bait and bass were on them at night. The problem was getting anywhere near the big pushes without a boat, mostly unmolested during the day while I observed. You'd have to position at a restricted passage to get a fly in play.

Silversides were pounded on the outer beach Saturday and glittered the shoreline at the Race. Countless numbers lined the beach. I don't get up that way often but relatives wanted to check it out.

Scup are running big this year and an unusually high number of small black sea bass in the sound this year. Soundside weir guys reporting less squid so far than typical but I bet that will change any day now.

I saw a few good migrating pods on SB outside, as expected.

Bayside action has been good inshore, but I talked to billingsgate guys who didn't do well. Some big bass on the herring east of Sesuit.

Man do the scallops taste good this time of year

Thanks Juro! Very encouraging!
I'm starting to tie for the Clave. What bait and size would one expect in a few weeks? CCBay side, Southside and East......

Pogies were in the tub last year... but pretty unmolested (at last years clave time).
Good to hear the Bass are on them now ... blues soon I'd guess?

Jim,

Blues are definitely in. We found a mix of bass and blues on tiny silverside yesterday in BBay. Also had a nice size chuck out of pogie late in the afternoon.

I was down at the refuge yesterday and could not beleive the number of Pogies I saw. There were even a couple of seals blitzing them. Pretty cool. Didn't see any bass or blues on them (or on the end of my line for that matter).

There are lots of big bluefish down on the cotuit flats now. Bass too.

Sounds like the bayside is where it's at for shore/yaks right now. I'm going to check it out tomorrow (barny or brewster)

Last week was the big bayside barrage from what I heard. I fished an hour and a half Sat am for the high drop and it was quite. I did pick up a couple of fish, the first being a bright 32" fish. A first for me, first fish of the season being a keeper, albiet my usual first is a holdover dink in the bass river. Looks like I'm going to finally get some serious fishing time this coming weekend.

Jim,

No definite plans. Leaving my options open to accommodate weather and reports as we get closer.

Race Point

Juro, I was down at the Race last weekend. There were herring and mackerel to the right of the lighthouse. There are some big bass in P'town harbor just past the drop off. You really need a boat or a yak because it is just a bit too deep to wade out at low tide. Loads of bait everywhere.

We fished outside Stage Harbor on Saturday afternoon and did nothing- we weren't too serious, saw some pogies, but no fish.

We fished on Barnstable Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and consistently hit fish from mid 20's to mid 30s- the fly outfished the junk exponentially. 20 feet of water, 500 or 600 grain sink tips and 1/4 clousers were the ticket. There are a lot of fish there.
