I'm back- on line.

Sometime last fall my computer went on the fritz, so I've been out of touch with the cyber flyfishing world, I finally got off my arse and got it repaired and just in time for the arrival off our striped friends from the south. I've been checking out the herring runs and most look very healthy. I was down the UDL creek yesterday throwing the 2handers into the ebbing tide and witnessed a large flock of gannets diving several 100 yards off ,my guess is either sea herring or mackeral. The big girls should be up into their spawning areas by now and if all goes well they'll be making their way north in about 2 weeks. The clave dates this year should put us smack in the middle of the migration. Juro I read in one of the other threads you plan on making some excursions to the big ditch , I'd be happy to join ya and share what I've learned over the years with the 2hander down there . I hope to run into a lot of you soon or I'll see ya at da clave.

Paul, welcome back on-line. You, Juro, and Basser have convinced me that 2handers have some applications. I'll see you in the a.m. Friday before the clave. Got a locations yet?

What lines do you recommend for use on the canal? My understanding is that skaggit lines are easier for beginners to learn with.

skagit lines

I've found skagits the best all around line to use on the canal, the short head length allows you cast any where on the canal without being concerned with the high banks behind you. Using the circle cast or spiral cast I'm able to cast for good distance with no concerns of hanging up .Reverse, double or single speys followed with a perry poke work nicely with this line.(which is the application the line was intended for). The 27' head coupled with a length of T-14 lead core works great when targeting the drop offs along the current seams, I use 5',10' and 15' lengths. Contrary to what you may hear , you don't have to be able to cast to middle to catch fish, water depths 10 feet in front of you can exceed 20' and down, with all sorts of fish holding structure.
