Good News at Ninigret

On February 12, the Charlestown Town Council voted unanimously to approve the recommendation of Charlestown's Parks and Recreation Commission that Ninigret Town Park remain open in May and June from 5 AM to 10 PM Sunday through Thursday and from 5 AM to Midnight Friday and Saturday. "Open" means that the gate won't be locked and we won't have to quit fishing in the middle of a worm hatch to avoid being locked in. Kayakers, be sure to check out the beautiful new launch at Grassy Point!

Charlie Vandemoer, Refuge Manager for the RI US Fish and Wildlife Service complex, was instrumental in getting Charlestown to accept this change. Many thanks to Charlie and to all of you who wrote and Emailed him, and to Bob Moeller of Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers and Dick Tremblay of Ct/RI Saltwater Anglers, for their support.

Check the February 2009 issue of the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association newsletter for a full report of the efforts that went into achieving this result.

Nice to think that my e-mail might have helped. When you drive down from northern VT, it matters.
We live in complex times, what with fishing, sailing and skiing seasons overlapping.

Many thanks to all that wrote in to Mr. Vandemoer in support! It certainly helped! The next step is to tweak the Sunday to Thursday 10pm closing. Many reading this have second shift evenings off from work and would appreciate a later closing on those days when there are less anglers. Please be sure and thank Dave Pollack. He started this post and was instrumental in spearheading this project.

So many places to fish.. friends to little time.

Great news. Congrats and kudos to Dave and all who made this happen
When sight fishing, look over your shoulder from time to time, you never know who's behind you
